Barcelona 2. Madrid 0. Just what we Catalonians like to see!!! We just returned from the smoke-filled, jubilant local bar - and are now being serenaded by the honking of cars parading through the old city at 12:15am. It was an important game in La Liga and the last match-up between Barça and Real Madrid. The competition between the two teams goes beyond just soccer... for the Catalans, who want their independence from Madrid, it is something more fundamental and visceral to beat Madrid - their oppressors. The bar was full of chanting young men, singing with their heart full of pride and emotion, cheering on their team. In one corner of the bar, there was a group of young women, apparently out on a bachelorette night. This is how deep the devotion runs. The funny part was that the bride-to-be was wearing a bridal veil and full soccer attire, complete with shin pads, cleats, jersey and shorts. The kicker: she was wearing the white Real Madrid uniform of Cristiano Ronaldo (Madrid's best player). Her girlfriends must have put her up to it, as they were obviously Barça fans. Pretty sweet bachelorette party if you ask me. ¡Visca Barcelona!
